I started my legal career in Oak Ridge. Both of my maternal grandparents and my maternal great aunt worked in Oak Ridge. I am a proud member of the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce. Oak Ridge has many historic sites that tell the story of the Manhattan Project and the atomic age. Some of these sites include the X-10 Graphite Reactor National Historic Landmark, the Y-12 National Security Complex, and the location of the K-25 Building. The American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge has interactive exhibits and films that tell the story of the city's role in the Manhattan Project. The K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Plant was the world’s longest roofed building in early 1945, stretching a mile long. K-25 was not only exceptional for its size, but also for the groundbreaking technology inside. Scientists pioneered gaseous diffusion uranium enrichment technology at the K-25 building. You can learn more at the K-25 History Center which is a part of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park. The Manhattan Project National Historical Park spans three sites Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Los Alamos, New Mexico; and Hanford, Washington.
But back to Oak Ridge, in addition to its phenomenal history many institutes and organizations support the wider East Tennessee community. One such institute is the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) offers programs for university students, postdocs, faculty, K-12 students, and teachers to strengthen science education and research.
Oak Ridge still leads the way through Oak Ridge National Laboratory as one of the world's premier research institutions empowering leaders and teams to pursue breakthroughs as they live and work in beautiful East Tennessee.
